Pridefest 2007… A quick follow up

June 28, 2007 at 5:37 pm (Pride, Union Square Megastore) (, )

Well we had an incredible turnout at the first Virgin Mega Pridefest, and it was well praised by the GLBT community. Throughout the day we had over 15 live performances including Peppermint, Ultra Nate, Ari Gold, Jonny McGovern, Jason Walker, Rafaele Rivera, Quentin Elias, Brian Kent, Sylvia Tosun and the Men of Lucas Entertainment.

Our goal was to get the city’s attention and perhaps raise a brow on Mayor Bloomberg who wouldn’t approve this year’s Pridefest for the city – and with the turnout of TV crews from MTV, LOGO and CBS, I think we accomplished our goal. We also welcomed Out & About, HX Magazine and Next Magazine…

Teaming up with Heritage of Pride was truly an unforgettable experience for our team in NYC. They worked around the clock to help bring the feel of the street festival into the Megastore and with over 3000 consumers packing the place I think its fair to say it was a success both for the Gay and Lesbian community as well as our team members out in NYC.

So for those of you who came out and showed your support – we thank you. Now let’s see what the city has to say about Pridefest 2008, and we’ll be sure to keep you posted on future events!

Pridefest 2007… A Virgin Affair

June 20, 2007 at 11:16 pm (Pride, Union Square Megastore, Upcoming Events)

Recently NYC’s own ambiguous Mayor, Michael Bloomberg, decided to not approve one of the biggest events for the annual Gay Pride Week. As many of you already know, the Pridefest street festival has been the hallmark of NYC’s Gay Pride Week.We here at Virgin, believe that the mayor’s decision was wrong

So we put our heads together to see how we could still show our support and perhaps get the attention of city officials. The result?  This year, since we couldn’t go to Pridefest, we decided to bring Pridefest to us.  We have teamed up with Heritage of Pride to open our Virgin Megastore at Union Square for what we’re calling Virgin’s First Annual Pridefest.  That’s right, oxymoronic as it might be, Pridefest is now a Virgin affair. .  For those of you who caught the parade at West Hollywood’s Pridefest last weekend (and the Altoids float that everyone finds so interesting), you will understand why we felt obligated to pick up the slack(s).

The folks in our Union Square store have been working around the clock to have several GLBT organizations plus a ton of artists come give live performances on Saturday June 23rd.   There are events throughout the entire week of June 18th at our store – including an in-store appearance by Erasure on Monday the 18th.  Events on the 23rd kick off at 2 PM and will include appearances by the men of Lucas Entertainment, DJ spinning, as well as live shows by Ari Gold, Brian Kent, Ultra Nate, Rafaele Rivera, Peppermint and Bianca Del Rio, just to name a few.   We know we’ll be over capacity at the store – which hopefully will garner the attention of the press – as well as Mayor Bloomberg.  The festival in the past has drawn over 70,000 people.  We hope to make this the biggest year yet.  Tell everyone you know to come show their support for Gay Pride Week. The doors will open at 10 AM, events start at 2 PM – but get there early as you know it will be a packed house…

Yes it’s been a long time coming, but Virgin Megastores have finally jumped into the world of Blogging… Well maybe not jumped, maybe more liked dipped a Virgin toe into the water, but as the VP of Marketing for Virgin Entertainment Group at least I have jumped into the world of Blogging. The rest, from store staff to our interns, blogging about their worlds will soon follow. Oh, and for those of you who don’t recognize the avatar above, that’s me at the top – Dee Mc Laughlin.

What is this Blog about, you ask? Mostly it will be about Virgin Megastores and all the cool stuff we have coming up. It might even touch on more stuff about Virgin outside of our stores. Even I’m not really sure how many directions or forms it might take, but in the words of Vince Vaughn, “(this Blog) will give nothing back to the academic community. As well as provide no public service of any kind. This much I promise you.” For those of you who are interested in the public service side of me, check out my MySpace Blog which talks about my recent trip to South Africa with our charity arm Virgin Unite – life-changing stuff!

On Virganity, I intend to talk about all the cool things that are taking Virgin Megastores to the next level – exclusive fashion, some British, some American, , DVDs that we love, video games we’re playing across the globe, sneak peaks at upcoming electronic gadgets that our buying team won’t let us play with (I wonder why…) , along with all the cool music selection that’s been our mantra for so long.   On top of that, I’ll be posting every now and then when we have cool events going on in our stores.

For example we have Pink Martini stopping by our Union Square Megastore in New York City to do a performance and signing and Enrique Iglesias will be performing songs from his new album, Insomniac, live at the Hollywood & Highland Courtyard near the Virgin Megastore and then immediately following he will be signing copies of his new album at the Hollywood Virgin Megastore. We’ve also just launched a killer gaming room at our Virgin Hollywood and Highland location – and it’s packed with PS3’s and XBOX 360 consoles, drop by and play against your friends.  Oh and if you get there soon you might just be able to pick up a Wii. In the meantime, here is a pretty cool video I just came across on Ryan Leslie’s playlist on YouTube. It’s from the Virgin Megastore in Times Square when Cassie launched her breakout album… I wasn’t there, and from the looks of the line, I’m glad I wasn’t!
