Janet Jackson is coming to our Virgin Megastore

February 21, 2008 at 7:47 pm (Upcoming Events) (, , )

Janet Jackson’s new album “Discipline” will release on February 26th. For those living in the LA area, you can come meet this legendary singer, as she will be performing live at the Hollywood and Highland complex and then will be at our Hollywood Virgin Megastore – right next to the Kodak Theatre – to sign copies of her new release. Our store staff are so excited to have her. The CD features productions by Jermaine Dupri, Ne-Yo, Stargate, Tricky Stewart, and The-Dream – and word has it that Janet is hoping this recording will do much better than her last two efforts. I couldn’t agree more.

The record’s single “Feedback” produced by Rodney Jerkins has already hit the radio waves back in early January. Have you heard it? I also listened to the track “Roller Coaster” which hit the Internet over the weekend…you can take a listen here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EvksrH9Dugs

I think it’s pretty good. I’m looking forward to hearing the whole album – especially hearing it live at our Hollywood and Highland complex. After all…who doesn’t need a little Rhythm Nation in their lives? If you want to reserve your spot in line to meet Janet at our store, you’ll need to purchase her album at our Hollywood Megastore to receive a wristband.

Hope to see you there –
Cheers,
Dee

FASHION WEEK in the Big Apple

February 20, 2008 at 8:08 pm (Uncategorized) (, , )

NYC wins the Super Bowl and they get Fall Fashion Week. Starting Saturday night, Bryant Park has been populated with 6 feet tall uber-gorgeous creatures and designers in a constant frenzy. Key buyers from the well-known department stores are sharing front row status with celebs. Big news from the runway for FALL included big bright plaids and opulent luxury in brocades, metallics & tweeds.
Betsy Johnson was inspired by the Beatnik look complete with jaunty berets. “It’s lean, mean, rock ‘n’ roll and edgy” she says of her collection. BCBG showed lots of dresses with details including origami pleats, jersey rosettes, asymmetric ruffles all in subtle tans and grays. Kimora Simmons’ Baby Phat line presented cheetah print denim but the rest of the line seemed a bit un-focused. Miss Sixty took on the 60’s vibe, adding a graffitied VW bus and Janis Joplin soundtrack to the runway. Hippie print dresses, wide-legged pants, and shaggy fake furs delighted the audience including Ashley Olsen, Anne Hathaway and Milla Jovovich. It’s a tough week, but the parties and the glamour make it worth the aching feet.

IS GOING GREEN JUST A FAD??

February 15, 2008 at 5:31 pm (Uncategorized) (, , )

One very hot topic around college campus, the dinner party, and in fashion is the trend of GOING GREEN. I am thrilled that it’s top of mind for many people but I hope that with all the media, people won’t become numb to the cause. We have been dabbling in Green Messaging t-shirts in the past and they have performed just ok. I don’t know if we were too ahead of the trend or if customers weren’t willing to spend a little more to save the earth. Luckily, the price of “being green” has gone down and we are excited to introduce some new styles. This month, we plan on bringing in some t-shirts from Junk Food, Chaser , etc. Check out your local Virgin to view the whole GREEN assortment. green.jpg

COLORS we must learn to love for fall 2008

February 15, 2008 at 5:19 pm (Uncategorized) (, , )

I am so ready for some warm weather! Seems our customers are as well. We have sold out of our fingerless gloves – who knew that would be a best seller. We don’t have much Outerwear left in the stores, and our lightweight jackets from TokiDoki, Harajuku and Junk Food are just hitting the floor. I love that the days are getting longer but I am sure we are in for a few more winter storms before it’s all over. In the meantime, I’m enjoying the great pastel tee shirts that signal Sping is near!

1. PANTONE 18-3843 BLUE IRIS- sounds yummy and this color looks good on everyone!
2. PANTONE 18-3531 ROYAL LILAC- I love all shades of light purple
3. PANTONE 18-5634 SHADY GLADE- lush and cool…. almost Eco friendly
4. PANTONE 18-4525 CARIBBEAN SEA- I want to visit
5. PANTONE 19-3938 TWILIGHT BLUE- described as a warmer navy
6. PANTONE 18-1550 AURORA RED- really rich red
7. PANTONE 14-1036 OCHRE
8. PANTONE 16-1448 BURNT ORANGE- charred pumpkin?
9. PANTONE 18-1015 SHITAKE – not sure who this color will flatter- it’s not a brown, not a gray, not a green… but I guess it will look good mixed with some of the others
10. PANTONE 18-1435 WITHERED ROSE- pinky brown… sounds romantic

FASHION in a Skater’s World

February 6, 2008 at 7:27 am (Maureen Lewis) (, , )

My buyers and I were in San Diego for the ASR (Action Sports) and Agenda shows over the weekend- meeting with some of our vendors including Quiksilver, Ambiguous, ZooYork and looking for new vendors to add to our STREET category. It really is our favorite show of the whole year. The mood was a bit more serious than usual, as beer wasn’t flowing until after 4 at the booths- the police were out in force making sure cocktail hour was enforced.

The vibe this year was much more gritty & dirty- the hot blonde Betty’s and surfer dudes were few & far between. Instead, both shows were packed with super-hip Asians (they can sport 3-4 fashion looks at a time and make it look effortless- in a good way), Motocross Guys, small independent buyers and Skaters. Jeans were tight and defied gravity- worn soooo low and without belts (how do those boys do it)? Everyone was sporting a cool hoody over a graphic tee and the skate shoe was the only acceptable footwear (although I did see some Reefs on a foot or two).

Believe it or not, we were looking at Back to School deliveries already- so I can share with you the hot trends that will hit our floors in late summer ‘08.

Red Buffalo Checks/Plaids- yes, Kurt made them hip and they are back in hoodies, jackets, shirts and even polos
Asymmetrical Details- Zippers and collars a little off the center
No more all over prints
80’s Neon & silhouettes is coming back for June/July delivery
Other strong colors- browns, reds, royal blue
Military details in woven shirts, jackets, coats
Fingerless gloves
Trucker hats (yes really)
Japanese Beanies
Details- cool zipper pulls, trim, hidden pockets, reversible, hoodies sewn into back of shirts, double hits, media pockets, fleece and appliqué.

Metallica on the Red Carpet

February 5, 2008 at 3:11 am (Uncategorized) (, , , )

I confess- I totally love award shows. Specifically, I love the fashion show on the Red Carpet. It’s great to see the color choices, jewelry and the hair (up, down, side swept?) making their way through the press. These actors really do set trends for what you will see in department stores in a few months.
The SAG fashions didn’t disappoint with Kate Beckinsale looking fresh in a bright yellow gown. There were lots of metallic strapless gowns worn by America Ferrera, Marion Cotillard, Ellen Pompeo and Christina Applegate. Earrings were big and made a statement. I loved the bling! Necklines were mostly bare and hair pulled up or back because of the rainy weather. Just wasn’t too crazy about the faux bob that some of the longer haired actresses were trying to pull off… Check out some of the red carpet looks at People Mag.

New Addition to Virgin Megasphere!

February 5, 2008 at 3:07 am (Uncategorized) (, , )

To give a bit more insight into the various product categories here at Virgin Megastores, I’ve asked some of Virgin’s top executives to blog about the latest in their departments. First up is Maureen Lewis, she is in charge of all our Fashion and accessory lines at the stores. We slowly started introducing fashion items into our stores a few years ago and now that department makes up a significant part of our Virgin Megastore chain – both online at http://www.VirginMega.com and inside our stores. Thought you might be curious to hear about the latest in fashion trends and what we’re planning this Spring and Summer in our fashion and accessory categories, and there’s no better person at Virgin to do this than Maureen.

Cheers,
Dee

Vampire Weekend at Union Square

February 1, 2008 at 5:57 pm (Uncategorized) (, , )

The Union Square location hosted an amazing event with Vampire Weekend last night to celebrate the release of their debut CD. We had over 350 fans in attendance at last night’s event, selling 222 CDS. Vampire Weekend began their performance at 11:30PM, and then signed CDs for fans following their performance. It was a fantastic event to have at the Union Square, as this band truly represents what this location is all about in music. Vampire Weekend are getting a huge buzz on the scene right now and have been receiving amazing reviews in such publications as Spin, NME, and Rolling Stone. They have 2 sold out shows at the Bowery Ballroom, and will also be appearing at the Coachella Music Festival this year.

Kudos to the team at Union Square – another terrific event.
