Is the internet putting an end to crazy holiday shopping?

Black Friday and the Saturday before Christmas have long been thought of as the busiest shopping days of the year, but is that still the case? As we all know the internet is changing the way consumers shop – which leads me to ask this question…are the days of packed malls, insanely long lines and early morning special sales coming to an end? Obviously it’s part of my job to make sure that we market Virgin products to our customers in the most effective way possible. So this year we decided to make sure we stocked our shelves to the full capacity – both in the stores and in our “virtual stockrooms” with the launch of our new retail site

We launched the site last week – as kind of a test to see if people would rather hit the stores or log on to find their best deals. It turned out to be an impressive launch – as we had over 10 million hits on our site and over 110,000 unique visits in just the first week. However, we also opened our stores earlier than usual for Black Friday madness – which turned out to be…well, madness. We offered special sales incentives inside our stores and we saw impressive pick up there as well. Maybe I just like to torture myself…but nothing gets me in the holiday spirit more than fighting the crowds to see what’s new, what’s hot and what is this year’s “must haves.” Plus…I enjoy all the Santa’s on the street corners explaining to people that they’re just “Santa’s helpers…the big guy is still up at the North Pole.” So while shopping from my home computer is awfully convenient and quick… I personally enjoy a bit of the action. I wish you the best in holiday shopping this year, whether it’s from home or you hit the malls – and if you hear about a great deal, please let me know. I’m always up for a good bargain.

This is Me. Dee Mc Laughlin.

Yes it’s been a long time coming, but Virgin Megastores have finally jumped into the world of Blogging… Well maybe not jumped, maybe more liked dipped a Virgin toe into the water, but as the VP of Marketing for Virgin Entertainment Group at least I have jumped into the world of Blogging. The rest, from store staff to our interns, blogging about their worlds will soon follow. Oh, and for those of you who don’t recognize the avatar above, that’s me at the top – Dee Mc Laughlin.

What is this Blog about, you ask? Mostly it will be about Virgin Megastores and all the cool stuff we have coming up. It might even touch on more stuff about Virgin outside of our stores. Even I’m not really sure how many directions or forms it might take, but in the words of Vince Vaughn, “(this Blog) will give nothing back to the academic community. As well as provide no public service of any kind. This much I promise you.” For those of you who are interested in the public service side of me, check out my MySpace Blog which talks about my recent trip to South Africa with our charity arm Virgin Unite – life-changing stuff!

On Virganity, I intend to talk about all the cool things that are taking Virgin Megastores to the next level – exclusive fashion, some British, some American, , DVDs that we love, video games we’re playing across the globe, sneak peaks at upcoming electronic gadgets that our buying team won’t let us play with (I wonder why…) , along with all the cool music selection that’s been our mantra for so long.   On top of that, I’ll be posting every now and then when we have cool events going on in our stores.

For example we have Pink Martini stopping by our Union Square Megastore in New York City to do a performance and signing and Enrique Iglesias will be performing songs from his new album, Insomniac, live at the Hollywood & Highland Courtyard near the Virgin Megastore and then immediately following he will be signing copies of his new album at the Hollywood Virgin Megastore. We’ve also just launched a killer gaming room at our Virgin Hollywood and Highland location – and it’s packed with PS3’s and XBOX 360 consoles, drop by and play against your friends.  Oh and if you get there soon you might just be able to pick up a Wii. In the meantime, here is a pretty cool video I just came across on Ryan Leslie’s playlist on YouTube. It’s from the Virgin Megastore in Times Square when Cassie launched her breakout album… I wasn’t there, and from the looks of the line, I’m glad I wasn’t!
